Guest Speaker:
Until two years ago Latin America held the top spot for global hydrocarbon discoveries. Brazil's massive pre salt play,
along with discoveries in Peru, Venezuela and Argentina, led the way. But recently the pace has slowed down, caused
in part by Brazil's shift in focus to development but also by the discovery of some other World Class plays in East Africa,
the African Equatorial Margin and Kurdistan. Still Latin America has many new emerging or maturing plays.

Until two years ago Latin America held the top spot for global hydrocarbon discoveries. Brazil’s massive pre salt play, along with discoveries in Peru, Venezuela and Argentina, led the way. But recently the pace has slowed down, caused in part by Brazil’s shift in focus to development but also by the discovery of some other World Class plays in East Africa, the African Equatorial Margin and Kurdistan. Still Latin America has many new emerging or maturing plays.
But while the exploration potential in these new plays is encouraging, it is early days. Moreover, some of these plays seem to be weighted down by above ground issues, such as sovereign ownership, nationalization, lack of infrastructure, and local content requirements. It seems as the industry is under attack or at the least vastly misunderstood despite the host nations’ strong mutual dependency or addiction to the rent from the hydrocarbons as well as the employment and indirect benefits.
This talk will look at those plays and discuss both the opportunities and their challenges.
